- Barros Basto, Arturo Carlos de
(1887-1961)
Portuguese leader of the marrano revival. He was born in Amarante near Oporto. He entered the military, and in the revolution of 1910 it was he who hoisted the Republican flag on the town hall of Oporto. After World War I he embraced Judaism and was active in the regeneration of the marrano community. His periodical Ha-Lappid spread Jewish ideas among the marranos. He also edited handbooks of religious guidance and wrote a history of Jewry in Oporto.
